Towards sustainable palm oil
Beiersdorf does not obtain any palm oil to produce cosmetics and also does not produce any processed substances made from a basis of palm oil or palm kernel oil. However, as is common in the cosmetics industry, there are some products in which we make use of necessary additives such as emulsifiers and surfactants. These are usually made on the basis of mineral and vegetable oils such as coconut oil, rapeseed oil or even palm oil and palm kernel oil.
We have been working in close collaboration with our suppliers for many years now to create more transparency in the supply chain in order to make the path from the source of raw materials to the derivatives sustainable and to support the development and expansion of sustainable palm oil and palm kernel oil cultivation. In addition to our commitment to the “Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil” (RSPO), we are also involved in the newly formed “Forum on Sustainable Palm Oil” (FONAP) and are committed to further development of the existing certification criteria.
We have made significant progress towards the use of sustainably produced palm kernel oil in recent years. We endeavour to obtain the ingredients concerned only from certified sustainable origin (“Certified Sustainable Palm Kernel Oil”) and to switch to segregated palm (kernel) oils and corresponding derivatives with nevertheless minimum mass balancing by 2020. Until such time as full conversion is achieved, Beiersdorf buys certificates via the “GreenPalm” platform. By 2014, 100% of palm oil and palm kernel oil equivalents contained in the raw materials were covered by certificates.
