How long does sunscreen last?

Every skincare product, including sunscreen, expires at some point. Find out how to check if your sunscreen is expired and if it’s okay to use expired sunscreen.

DOES SUNSCREEN EXPIRE?

Like any skincare product, sunscreen does expire. Most sunscreen products have an expiration date on the packaging, which makes it easy to determine if it's expired. In contrast, others may not, and if you’re not sure when you bought it, we recommend you purchase a new one before using it. It's also good practice to replace your sunscreen every year.

HOW LONG DOES SUNSCREEN LAST ONCE OPENED?

Sunscreen can remain effective for up to 3 years once it's been opened. Generally, sunscreen can last 6 to 12 months after opening and varies per product. Be sure to check the product packaging and follow directions for the best results.

3 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR SUNSCREEN IN GOOD CONDITION

Skincare ingredients in sunscreen break down and deteriorate over time. This process can be sped up by unfavourable storage conditions, such as heat. This can result in the product becoming ineffective before its stated expiration date.

Here are a few ways to store your sunscreen to ensure it lasts up to its expiration date:
1) Make sure it's stored in a dark place to prevent UV rays from damaging it.
2) Avoid exposing your sunscreen to heat which can cause the formula to separate and become ineffective.
3) As with heat, moisture can cause sunscreen to separate and even cause mould growth. Be careful with storing your sunscreen in the bathroom since the damp air and fluctuating humidity can cause your sunscreen to go off.

WHERE IS THE EXPIRY DATE ON SUNCREAM?

Your sunscreen package may have a jar symbol with the lid open to show when your sunscreen will go out of date. The open jar symbol will have a number and an ‘M’ on it which refers to how long the sunscreen will last once opened. For example, at the back of the NIVEA Sensitive Sun Lotion, you’ll see a ‘12M’ on the open jar symbol. Hence, this means that the sunscreen will last for 12 months once opened.

Lastly, an hourglass symbol on the packaging means that the product will last for 30 months from its manufacturing date, opened or unopened.

For example, if you notice a change in consistency such as it’s become more watery or clumpy, then it’s time to replace your sunscreen. Moreover, if you notice a change in smell or colour, it’s advised that you do not use the products and purchase a new one.

IS IT OKAY TO USE EXPIRED SUNSCREEN?

Expired sunscreen means that the ingredients are no longer effective at protecting you from UV rays. This is because the active ingredients that protect you from the sun begin to decompose and become inactive. As a result, using expired sunscreen means you’re more vulnerable to sunburn, sun spots and skin irritation.

Wearing sunscreen is a necessity for protecting your skin from the sun. Be sure to replace your sunscreen yearly. Store it in a cool, dry, dark place to prevent it from going off early.

5 REASONS WHY SUNSCREEN IS IMPORTANT

Here are 5 reasons why it’s important to wear sunscreen:

1) Sunscreen is effective against harmful UV rays from the sun that can lead to sunburn. Continuous sunburn can lead to other skin issues like premature wrinkling or even cancer.
2) Wearing sunscreen helps to prevent inflammation and redness caused by prolonged UV ray exposure.
3) Applying SPF to the skin reduces the harmful effect of the sun and helps in reducing the risk of skin cancer.
4) Frequent exposure to the sun can cause hyperpigmentation as it triggers the production of melanin that gives the skin its colour. Hence, regular use of sunscreen can help prevent hyperpigmentation.
5) Sunscreen protects the Collagen and Elastin produced by the skin to remain healthy and smooth, preventing premature ageing.
