Sun protection factor, often abbreviated as SPF, is used to measure how long you can be exposed to the sun’s rays without getting sunburnt. For example, an SPF 30 will offer 30x your usual exposure time, so if you’re prone to burning after 5 minutes of exposure, you should now be able to enjoy around 150 minutes of exposure without burning, as long as you apply your sunscreen correctly.

How often should you re-apply sunscreen?

There’s no exact science that determines how long you can spend in the sun and stay protected. No sunscreen can truly offer all-day sun protection, so to help stop your skin from burning we recommend topping up your sunscreen every 2 hours and after taking a dip in the sea (even if the sunscreen is water resistant).

Choosing the SPF of a sunscreen depends on your skin type. If you’ve got light skin (type 1 or 2), you’re more prone to sunburn, so the best sunscreen for you is usually SPF 50. If you’ve got darker or olive skin, the best sunscreen may be SPF 30, which will help protect you from the sun’s harmful UV rays while also allowing a tan to develop.
