For us, “care” is not only part of our core business but also a core
value that is our responsibility to people and their environment.

Our path to sustainability

NIVEA is synonymous with trust and quality – which is why we are always working to sustainably reduce the impact of our products on the environment. “Care” is at the centre of our actions. In this way we can make sure that people are the focus of everything we do.

High quality raw materials for high quality products

Some of the raw materials that we use in our products are scarce and there is no guarantee that they will still be available in the future. We therefore support sustainable sourcing of raw materials and are constantly working on developing alternatives to meet our high quality standards.

Beiersdorf supports sustainable farming practices for palm oil

Towards sustainable palm oil

Beiersdorf does not obtain any palm oil to produce cosmetics and also does not produce any processed substances made from a basis of palm oil or palm kernel oil. However, as is common in the cosmetics industry, there are some products in which we make use of necessary additives such as emulsifiers and surfactants. These are usually made on the basis of mineral and vegetable oils such as coconut oil, rapeseed oil or even palm oil and palm kernel oil.

We have been working in close collaboration with our suppliers for many years now to create more transparency in the supply chain in order to make the path from the source of raw materials to the derivatives sustainable and to support the development and expansion of sustainable palm oil and palm kernel oil cultivation. In addition to our commitment to the “Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil” (RSPO), we are also involved in the newly formed “Forum on Sustainable Palm Oil” (FONAP) and are committed to further development of the existing certification criteria.

We have made significant progress towards the use of sustainably produced palm kernel oil in recent years.  We endeavour to obtain the ingredients concerned only from certified sustainable origin (“Certified Sustainable Palm Kernel Oil”) and to switch to segregated palm (kernel) oils and corresponding derivatives with nevertheless minimum mass balancing by 2020. Until such time as full conversion is achieved, Beiersdorf buys certificates via the “GreenPalm” platform. By 2014, 100% of palm oil and palm kernel oil equivalents contained in the raw materials were covered by certificates.

By the way, you can find an overview of the ingredients used in your favourite product on the product information page.

Alternatives to testing on animals

Animal experiments for cosmetic products have been banned in the EU since 2004 – and for all the ingredients in these products since 2013. Long before this date, Beiersdorf dispensed with animal testing whenever possible. We are convinced that our products do not need to be tested on animals to determine their safety and efficacy.

We have been working on the development of so-called “in vitro” alternatives to animal testing for more than 20 years.

Regardless of the ban, developing and accepting alternative methods is still very important to Beiersdorf. For more than 20 years, Beiersdorf has been working successfully in professional bodies and associations on developing in-vitro alternatives to animal testing. We are one of the leading and best known and accepted research companies in the world in this respect.

We are actively working towards ensuring that the existing non-animal alternative methods are accepted worldwide by the respective legislators and authorities, and we support scientific efforts to close the currently existing gaps in alternative methods by providing staff and financing.

Less waste while maintaining the same quality

Regardless of whether the material is plastic, glass, metal, cardboard or paper, we're constantly working on reducing the amount of material we use. Wherever possible, we apply the sustainability criteria; avoid, reduce, reuse and recycle to all of our packaging innovations. Today, nearly 100% of our packaging materials are recyclable.

Almost 100% recyclable packaging materials

We are constantly working on improving our products and packaging. Whether we use plastic, glass, metal, cardboard or paper – we are always attempting to minimize the amount of material used. We have had great success – almost 100% of our packaging materials are recyclable today. For example, one success story is the development of our NIVEA Body Lotion. By redeveloping the packaging we were able to achieve amazing savings. Another way of reducing our packaging materials is using our refill pouch. Refillable soap dispensers result in a significant reduction in waste. Our NIVEA Creme Shower refill results in 75% less waste, for example.

Our formulas contain over 80% non-fossil ingredients.

We are constantly working towards reducing our consumption of water, energy and scarce raw materials in production and sales.

Our packaging materials are 100% recyclable.

With our new packaging design we can transport more products per pallet. This will enable us to reduce our CO2 emissions by 585 tonnes per year.

We have reduced our packaging volume by 15% – this means we will save 350 tonnes of plastic per year.
